Welcome to Vampires: The Face of Fear!
Welcome to Vampires: Myth or Monster! This blog seeks to illustrate the meaning of the vampire motif and monster in modern day film and novel culture. Before delving in, one should understand that an interpretation of anything is subjected to personal views and thoughts and that opinions differ. This blog seeks to examine modern day interpretations of vampires that appear in movies and novels. With that said, let’s discuss the importance of understanding the meaning behind vampires in today’s culture. Besides from being an excellent entertainment value, vampires are connotations to a deeper and darker fear. This fear is the fear of aging and weakness and the distance it creates from society’s warm light, essentially becoming an other on the edge of acceptance and far from ideal “perfection.” Vampires embody immortality and power and are wrapped in darkness and a stigma of malice. Today’s movies and books show vampires taking away the invaluable characteristics of man: youth, power, championship, and even life. Understanding the representation of these night dwellers gives us insight to society’s fears. A fascination with vampires is easy to come about; who isn’t curious about immortal beings with supernatural powers and abilities? Over various film adaptations of Dracula and other such vampires, I found myself intrigued by these creatures and chose to delve deeper into their meaning. To me, the modern day vampire represents society’s fear of old age, weakness, the dark, “otherness,” and death. All pieces of work here illustrate that statement in some way or form.
Fear is the main source of superstition, and one of the main sources of cruelty. To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom.
- Bertrand Russell
